You Can Act The Way You Want IF You Think The Way You Should

You Can Act The Way You Want IF You Think The Way You Should

"Act your way into feeling, don’t feel your way into acting.” A well known quote that I have used in talks and tried to practice in my own life for quite some time. In fact, if truth be told, I was a wholehearted believer in the concept. Today, I’m different. I would reword the quote to something like this.

You Can Act The Way You Want IF You Think The Way You Should

Somewhere in my past I must have tossed my feelings and thinking out the door in favor of a purely rational, “do better, try harder” mindset. I would say something like this, ”Craig, keep doing and eventually you will start being.”

So, leaders, parents, and anyone who will listen. Stop “acting” your way into anything. Start thinking and believing better about

Keep Going When You Feel Broken, Don’t Give Up!

Can we be clear right up front about three things?

  1. Brokenness is a new beginning not a final ending.
  2. Broken does not mean beaten.
  3. Your past mistakes don’t undermine your future potential.

Recall with me the first 400 meter semi-final heat of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona Spain. In fact, it’s the only moment I recall from those games and it was a defining moment.

It was such a defining moment I don’t even remember who won the race that day but I do remember one runner, Derek Redmond. Why do I remember him? Because he didn’t quit when

Top 5 John Wooden Quotes Leaders Need To Know

Top 5 John Wooden Quotes Leaders Need To Know

The NCAA final Four Tournament ends this evening. There will be a winner and a looser. Although, arguably one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time, if not THE greatest coach of all time would say the looser didn’t really loose, they just ran out of time!

John Wooden was an incredible leader with penetrating and poignant wisdom which he often expressed with a quip or quote. They weren't just “good quotes” they were nuggets of memorable and transferable wisdom for us today.

His quotes weren't just for coaches or athletes either. They were for leaders, parents, students and whoever else would listen because they applied to all of life, not just basketball.

With that in mind here are my top 5

The 5 Enabling Ways of Great Leaders

I don’t know how I have come to think of the word “Enable” as negative but somewhere along the line I have. Maybe I associate it with co-dependent behavior or maybe I hear it used in negative ways like, “You should stop enabling their unhealthy behavior.” But the fact is, the word “Enable” is key to growing healthy leaders.

If you look up the word enable in the dictionary you will get this definition. “To provide someone with power, means or opportunity. To make possible.”

The fact is great leaders “Enable” people to make a difference in and with their lives! Here are 5 enabling ways of great leaders

5 Ways A Leader Makes Those Around Them Better

As I was reading through 1 Peter chapter 5 this morning a question came out of the blue, what is the role of a leader? I know there have been volumes of books and chapters within books that answer this question many times over but what hit me today was not what leaders “do” but who they “are” that makes such a huge difference.

I am not discounting what leaders “do” to make those around them better. I have written enough blogs and books that address this topic. But in the stillness of the “Starbucks Morning Rush” (Sarcasm intended) it hit me

7 Fears Leaders Face And What To Do About It

Leaders are strong, courageous and brave! Leaders cast vision, declare direction and march out front leading others into a bright and hopeful future! Sounds good, right? Yes, of course it sounds good. Courage, bravery, casting vision, that’s good stuff and it’s what leaders do, it’s who leaders are.

However, as a leader, I know each of us have fears. We don’t always publicize them but they are there, just below the surface. There is a fine line between openly declaring our fear and simply “hiding our panic.”

On occasion when leaders are tired, confused, and struggling with their own self-esteem, they may open up and acknowledge their fears to

What Can A Leader Do When They Are Down, Depleted & Discouraged?

When You Are Down…Be Thankful

Be thankful for what you have, not what you don’t. I’m writing this post sitting near my son’s hospital bed with a bad bone infection in his hand. He had an accident a month ago to reattach the partially detached finger, revascularization surgery to repair an artery and two pins to hold the bone together. And, just when everything was going well, a bone infection, another surgery and a long road to recovery. Now what? Mad, upset, blame, yes…I have felt all three. However, when I stop and take an inventory of the room for the last 45 minutes I can choose to focus on the circumstances or the possibilities. Here are seven
