God Restores…But Why? How? + Bonus Audio

This post differs from many in that it’s more of an audio post. A few weeks ago I spoke at David C Cook’s Tru Gathering at Willow Creek. The topic, God Restores. I spent some time exploring the what and why of restoration but what got me was the how.

I have written out a few thoughts with verses on the topic but would encourage you to download the audio and listen to the story of how God Restores. I believe that during the talk I was changed more than the people listening.

God shows up in unique ways and, at times, when we are not ready or willing to come to Him. This was such a moment for me.

What Is Restoration?

Restoration simply means “to put back.”
Question: What do you want God to “put back” in your life today?

Why Does God Restore?

Because It’s His nature
So whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved kindness, and we will find help. Hebrews 4:16 CEV

Because He views brokenness as a condition not an event.
Because all people have sinned, they have fallen short of God’s glory. Romans 3:23 GW

Because He wants to bring others hope from our hurt.
God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NLT

How Does God Restore?

He Works Together With Us (John 11:32-44)

Large Stone Moved - Others
Verse 39
Jesus asked for the stone gave a command to be followed, "Move the stone away."

Lazarus Come Out - Jesus
Verse 43
Jesus shouted, ”Lazarus, come out!"

Let Him Go - Others
Verse 44
Jesus said, ”Take the cloth off of him and let him go."

Let’s Kill Lazarus
Fast forward to John Chapter 12 verses 10 and 11.
“The chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too. Lazarus was the reason why many people were leaving the Jews and believing in Jesus.” John 12:10-11 GW

Question: Why kill Lazarus?
Answer: To Kill the Story.

God’s mercy is greater than our mistakes and the mistakes you or I have made can be used. You may feel down and out or like Lazarus, dead! However, God is in the restoration business and He wants to hear your story He wants others to hear your story.

  • David Says, “He restores my soul.” Psalms 23:3 NASB
  • The Psalmist says, Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again.” Psalm 71:20 NIV
  • God Says, “I will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten.” Joel 2:25 ESV

Oh, did you know that the name Lazarus Means “God Will Help.” How’s that for God working with us to restore!

Question: What do you need restored in your life right now?
